Nvidia SHIELD Portable 2 Seen At FCC; Will We See The New Gaming Handheld In The Near Future?
Cris Xander JulianoA follow-up to the popular Nvidia SHIELD Portable has never been officially announced, so fans of the hand-held device are left wondering when it is going to get updated. However, a possible SHIELD Portable 2 just surfaced on the Federal Communications Commission website, according to a report by Slash Gear.
The original SHIELD Portable was innovative at the time of its release, as few OEMs made purely gaming-oriented Android devices. The SHIELD Portable beat its competitors by performance and design.
Due to its success, Nvidia developed other Android devices, such as the SHIELD tablet and, the most recent addition, the SHIELD Android TV. Other than those devices, the SHIELD Portable 2 was never mentioned.
Sadly, however, in a report by Digital Trends, a release of the SHIELD Portable 2 is very unlikely in the near future. The report stated that the device was submitted to the FCC for regulatory certification a year ago with a 180-day confidentiality request. That request just expired and so the device had eventually surfaced on its website.
It is mentioned that a possible reason for discontinuing the SHIELD Portable 2 was the creation of the Android TV streaming device. These are just speculations; but with the Nintendo Switch coming out this year, a follow up for Nvidia's handheld device is highly unlikely.
In addition, the Nintendo Switch will be running Nvidia's very own Tegra X1, which is another reason for the company to let Nintendo shine. This is because it will bring only a small incentive for Nvidia to create one of its own high-performance gaming handheld devices. Gamers and fans can only hope that Nvidia goes forward with the development of the new handheld.
