'Horizon: Zero Dawn,' 'RIGS,' 'Killzone Mercenary' Developer Guerrilla Cambridge To Shut Down As Sony 'Makes Changes'
Arianne GiftA Sony Interactive Entertainment statement served as an announcement that the Cambridge studio of Guerrilla Games will be closed. Guerrilla Games is the developer behind "Horizon: Zero Dawn," "RIGS Mechanized Combat League" and the "Killzone" games.
Cambridge Studio Shuts Down
Previously known as SCEE Cambridge, the studio also worked on the "MediEvil" games, "LittleBigPlanet" for PlayStation Portable, "Primal," "24: The Game" and more over the past 19 years. According to PlayStation Lifestyle, all Guerrilla Cambridge staff will be laid off, but Sony will try to re-designate people to other projects. The game console giant will also talk to local developers regarding job openings to assist team members.
However, Sony's statement clarified that Guerrilla Games Amsterdam, developer of "Horizon: Zero Dawn" and the "Killzone" series, will not be affected. "...by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development... we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players," Sony says.
Sony confirmed the impending shutdown to Games Industry, saying that the compulsory redundancies are "regrettable." The decision to cut off studio operations comes after reviewing current PlayStation projects. "...in order to deliver on our strategic objectives, it is necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure," said the platform holder. Sony has reassured that the decision should not affect the studio's incredible games and services.
Other Developer Studios That Closed In 2016
The move follows the closure of Sony's Cheshire studio, Evolution Studio, 10 months ago, makers of "Driveclub." The creator of the "Wipeout" games, Studio Liverpool, was also closed last year. However, Sony did open a new studio in Manchester in 2015, and continues to operate studios in London and Guildford.
Guerilla Cambridge's most recent title was the PlayStation VR release "RIGS". The studio has been in existence for 19 years. A spokeswoman for Sony said about 50 people were currently employed there.
