Samsung Calls 'Dibs' on New Snapdragon 835 Chipset For Galaxy S8; Competition May Be in Trouble
Dannel Picaccio Camille Perez LozanoKorean powerhouse Samsung is said to have called dibs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processors; a move that can be both good and bad for the rest of the mobile phone industry. This unit is slated to go into the Samsung Galaxy S8 system, which means that no other units prior to it will have access to the 835 chip.
According to Forbes, this move to exploit and hoard the said processor forced the other competing brands to settle with the Snapdragon 821. This further implies that the LG G6 will be using the Snapdragon 821, while the HTC U Ultra will have the 2016 silicon respectively. Specs-wise, many are still uncertain on how the 2017 chip will fare.
As per The Verge, the move ignited a few reactions from Android users everywhere, especially for those who look ahead to getting phones rigged with the Snapdragon 835 early this year. Some Android companies stated that the Snapdragon 835 will not make it to the spring release meant for the flagship devices. Meanwhile, others are staying mum and believe that they will do well with the Snapdragon 821 -- or at least they have to.
It was said to have come naturally that Samsung's acquisition of the chips was meant to happen, given that they once disregarded using the Snapdragon 810 because of overheating anomalies. Overall, the respect that Samsung established with Qualcomm's product line changed drastically. It is now considered the first to ever lay hands on the Snapdragon 835.
Release-wise, recent reports by ET News claim that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be available in April 15 in the Korean territories. This means that the US will get it at a later date. Samsung has been known to use a combination of the Snapdragon silicon with the Exynos processors, most notably for the Western territories.
