Core i3 7350K Review: Can An Overclocked i3 Run Faster Than A Locked i5?
Cris Xander JulianoThe Core i3 4130 has been a popular choice for users on a tight budget when it comes to PC building. With the release of the Core i3 7350K, users are now able to overclock the same. In this review by Eurogamer, it may determine whether or not an overclocked i3 runs faster than a locked Core i5.
First take a look at its price, it's a dual-core chip that costs around $168 to $179 which is quite expensive for what it offers and its price range is not that far from a lower-end locked i5 quad-core chips. Although, the Core i3 7350K is the fastest ever made that runs 4.2GHz out of the box.
One other thing to consider is the motherboard itself. In order to overclock this i3 chip, it is required for users to have a premium-priced Z170 or Z270-based motherboard. Additionally, it will run more smoothly when paired with faster memory. Add all the expenses and it might be more practical to purchase the Core i5 7600K instead.
In Addition, according to the video, they have overclocked the Core i3 chip and was able to achieve 4.8GHz and at one point, 4.9GHz. However, it generated a tremendous amount of heat even when it was paired with an expensive Corsair H100i GTX closed-loop water cooler.
Overall, an overclocked Core i3 7350K chip runs as fast as a locked i5 and even faster for some games. However, it is being pushed to its limit when users choose to overclock the same, plus the added expenses for the required motherboard, fast memory and expensive cooling system, it's not really worth it and it's more advisable to just get the quad-core i5 chip that is just slightly more expensive at $182.
