‘Designated Survivor’ Actor Kal Penn Raises Over $500,000 Through CrowdRise For Syrian Refugees In Response To A Racist Tweet
CJ Estimada"You don't belong here you f-ing joke." This was the racist Twitter remark sent to the "Designated Survivor" actor Kai Penn after President Donald Trump signed an executive order barring refugees and immigrants from a number of Middle Eastern countries from getting in the U.S. This is in line with what most call a "Muslim ban." The 39-year-old actor, producer, chef and civic activist of Indian descent was told by a social media user that he didn't belong in the US.
Because Of A Racist Tweet
Kal Penn, in response, has raised an incredible amount of money in less than 24 hours for refugees. This will go to the International Rescue Committee through the CrowdRise donation page with a tagline that says "Donating to Syrian Refugees in the name of the dude who said I don't belong in America." It all stemmed from that racist tweet, according to Entertainment Weekly. Penn further added, "To the dude who said I don't belong in America, I started a fundraising page for Syrian Refugees in your name."
Donations For The Refugees On The Rise
In recent news, British dual citizens will now be allowed to travel to the US after Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary lobbied with the president. Along with Syria, the ban affects travelers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia.
As of this writing, the money raised is now over $600,000, as per CrowdRise. The actor said this is a testament to how proud of the beautiful country and how fired up people are to resist the new president's dangerous policies with solidarity and love. He thanked the donors and encouraged more to give as the page remains open.
Kal Penn was appointed Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement by the Obama administration in June 2009, to which he served on and off for his acting career. Penn starred in "A Very Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas" in 2010 and "How I met Your Mother" in 2011.
