'League of Legends' Magma Chamber: The 'LOL' Map That Did Not Make It
Keisuke AkioThe Magma Chamber was set to be one of the most sweeping game modes featured in "League of Legends." Riot originally shared plans for a new Field of Justice back in 2010. The community was excited to discover and enjoy the new volcanic arena.
However, after numerous teases, the new map was canceled and its development ceased. Here are all the details on a map that was doomed to the darkness of "League of Legends" history.
Magma Chamber was specifically made for 5v5 play, just like the "League of Legends'" Summoner's Rift, but it was made to have a different feel and strategic approach. Contrasting the Rift, Magma Chamber focused on smaller, more tactical fights that required players to have outstanding map awareness to achieve victory in specific lanes.
The "League of Legends'' Magma Chamber's map was larger than Summoner's Rift and featured longer lanes that actively discouraged players from touring around as a team. The complete size of the map also connotes that players had to rely on their own skills during the 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 settings, as support from a teammate would be a much rarer instance.
"League of Legends'' Magma Chamber also featured four static teleportation pads nestled between the lanes. PCGamer notes that these pads were designed to offer unique ways for players to quickly get back to their lanes and have access to key objectives. In addition, Riot had also planned a hoard of new neutral jungle monsters that would buff the team who managed to defeat them.
According to speculations, the Magma Chamber was canceled by Riot as the 5v5 version did not fit all of "League of Legends" various playstyles. In addition, the great emphasis on the solo lane would also push most players to choose strong carry champions and duelists. Magma Chamber had set out to create a completely new meta. However, in so doing, it produced one that punished more play styles than it encouraged.
