Android 7.1.2 On First Public Beta Now; Google Abandons Nexus 6 & Nexus 9
Keisuke AkioGoogle has officially announced the beta testing period for Android 7.1.2. The Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 smartphones, however, will not likely to receive the latest update.
The search engine giant announced that Android 7.1.2 is rolling out for its first public beta to its supported devices. The only information we have so far about Android 7.1.2, is that it is doing augmentation maintenance release centered on enhancements. It comprises basically of a number of bug fixes and optimizations, alongside a small number of refinements for carriers and users.
Droid Life notes that devices supported for the Android 7.1.2 beta include the Pixel and Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus Player, and Pixel C. The Nexus 6P will join the party soon. In this latest update, however, the site claims that Google confirmed the exclusion of the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.
Google reportedly disclosed that it is going to start the Android 7.1.2 Nougat software to users who were enrolled in the Android Beta Program. Moreover, the company specifically pointed out which devices were set up to receive the software in an early build format. This excludes both the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9. In addition, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are also beyond the period of their regular software updates.
This means that the most recent update, Android 7.1.1, will be the last that both devices will get from Google as an official software update. Google, however, will send out security updates to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 as these two are both covered by Google's security updates policy, says, Android Headlines.
In 2016, Google officially abandoned the Nexus brand and debuted two new phones with the Pixel name. Nexus used to represent Google's Android OS, but Pixel took over that the flagship and provided a premium smartphone experience.
