Facebook Has Almost 2 Billion Users; Mark Zuckerberg Announces Need To Expand Staff, Expenditures To Prioritize Video Content
Regin OlimberioFacebook's earnings report shows that there are 1.86 billion new monthly users. The social media giant also reported a profit of $3.57 billion in Q4 of 2016 alone, doubling the $1.56 billion in the same period of 2015.
Facebook is also transforming into an on-the-go platform with 1.15 billion of its active users checking their accounts from mobile devices. This development prompts advertisers to create mobile-friendly contents which in turn boosted the revenue to 84 percent. Last year, ad revenue only accounts for 53 percent.
Meanwhile, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a major ramp-up for staffing, investment and expenditures. This aggressive attitude towards 2017 is mainly pushed by Zuckerberg's ethos that video content should be prioritized in Facebook, according to IBTimes.
Among Facebook's family of apps, it can be observed that video contents are given sufficient boost. Instagram Stories suddenly offshoots to 150 million daily users. Messenger received a facelift in camera features and Facebook itself will start to roll out some video-specific updates.
Earlier this week, Facebook reportedly tried to tap Netflix to come up with original video content. What is dubbed as Facebook Live is a concerted effort among top sister apps like Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp for a video streaming capability.
According to CNET, live streaming and video content have already become a legitimate phenomenon on social media. Facebook Live has sent ripples among other video content services like Netflix, Vimeo and YouTube. The former has introduced offline playability options to cater to those who don't have constant internet connection. On the other hand, YouTube is working on a feature that will allow users to live-stream by just using their mobile devices.
To conclude, there is a tangible precedent over Zuckerberg's claim that social media is entering the "golden age for live video." The trend is capturing not just plain streaming of birthday celebrations, but even national events as well. For instance, just last week, President Trump announced a new Supreme Court appointment through Facebook Live.
