Apple Watch Dominates Smartwatch Industry; Can LG Android Wear 2.0, Samsug Gear & Fitbit Carve a Share?
Regin OlimberioAnalytics firm Canalys suggest that Apple is dominating the top of smartwatch kingdom as it accounts for 80% of total revenue this Q1 of 2017. Since Apple Watch Series 2 debuted in September 2016, the total units shipped allegedly breached a whooping 12 million and roughly $2.6 billion revenue.
Not to get too excited, the Cupertino Tech Giant has been keeping the real figures behind their chests so it is difficult to make a spot-on analysis. However, Apple's dominance over smartwatch industry is still undisputed. If Android Wear 2.0 can close in the gap remains to be seen as the latter is relatively new, having launched just days ago.
In Q4 of 2016, Apple Watch Series 2 sold a record of 6 million units. This has huge disparity over 1.1 million projected sales they made prior to launch, IBTimes reported.
If there are competitors that are really inching its way through Apple's dominance, it could be Fitbit or Samsung which landed at second and third place respectively. You can see how Apple Watch compares to Fitbit here, knowing which one is better. Albeit decision to cut jobs, Fitbit is still a solid option for cheaper smartwatch. For Samsung, it launched almost alongside Apple its Gear S3 Classic and Frontier versions.
At any rate, smartwatch industry will finally reveal competitors, come Mobile World Congress 2017 at the end of the month. Reports indicate that top names like Samsung and newcomers like LG and Huawei are trying to carve their share out of Apple.
Meanwhile, observers suggest that Apple Watch Series 2 is successful in Q4 2016 because it timed its launch when there is no clear competition. Strategy Analytics also disclose that there are few high-end gadgets that launched at that time so Apple captured the helm as the most popular holiday gift.
Upon release of Series 2, Apple also implemented an aggressive pricing on predecessor Series 1. This decision placed the first Apple Watch in a situation to "cripple" Fitbit's Blaze because they are already within the same price range
