‘Overwatch’ May Not Be Getting ‘Doomfist’ Any Time Soon [VIDEO]
Rei LantionEver since the latest patch hit the "Overwatch" PTR, the internet's been struck with Doomfist fever. The hype intensified when Yahoo Esports posted a video of Terry Crews' mock audition as Doomfist's voice on February 3, but apparent hints in the latest patch have sent fans' expectations rocketing through the roof.
Lack of confirmation on Blizzard's end has yet to deter the enthusiasm, and players predict Doomfist will arrive sooner rather than later. But are we jumping the gun here?
PTR Hints
According to VG 24/7, one of the Doomfist hints found by "Overwatch" players in the latest PTR involves a wire mech file. It's reportedly a new model of the Numbani Payload containing Doomfist's gauntlet, only the glass is broken.
Another hint is new menu music in the PTR. It's been changed to the music you can hear playing during the original "Overwatch" reveal cinematic, when Reaper and Widowmaker try to steal the gauntlet. VG 24/7 reports that the music is Doomfist's theme. They also mention that the Hero Gallery UI has been changed slightly, "as if to make space for another Hero card."
Too Obvious for Blizzard
While these occurrences are certainly odd, it might be best to remember that they aren't in fact hints. They're just minor changes Blizzard made to the PTR, and they don't actually suggest the arrival of a new hero. The texture change remains hidden in the code, not live in the actual "Overwatch" game. Furthermore, the shattered glass doesn't actually mean Doomfist's come back to reclaim his gauntlet.
There's also the fact that new heroes in "Overwatch" are released few and far between. The only two so far have been Ana and Sombra; Ana went live July 2016 and Sombra followed around four months later, in November. It's barely been three months following her release.
What's more, it seems that Overwatch's development team is more focused on fixing the current heroes, given the extreme balancing changes done to Roadhog, D.Va, and Bastion in the last couple months.
Are we getting Doomfist for "Overwatch"? Perhaps. Will it be any time soon? Highly unlikely.
