Next ‘Overwatch’ Event Celebrates Unity Day: ‘Numbani Unity Day’ Cinematic To Arrive March 21, Doomfist Revealed On The Same Day? [VIDEO]
Rei LantionWhile everyone's hyped up for Doomfist's apparently imminent arrival, fans have pointed to a possible new "Overwatch" event that could tie in neatly with the minor changes made to the PTR. New menu music, a wire mech file hidden in the game's code, and a change in the Hero Gallery UI all seem to point to a new character. Regardless of whether or not Doomfist is arriving soon as a playable hero, the chances of him being revealed in a Numbani Unity Day cinematic are very high.
The Clue in 'Overwatch' Recall Cinematic
YouTube user Unit Lost-Great British Gaming points out that the Unity Day of "Overwatch" lore is first mentioned in the "Overwatch" cinematic, "Recall." A minute and twenty seconds or so into the video finds Winston watching a news report about the second Omnic crisis in Russia. One of the headlines at the bottom of the news screen reads "Numbani Postpones Annual Unity Festival After Anonymous Threat..."
Numbani Unity Day is also mentioned in Numbani's Gamepedia page: "Omnics and humans built Numbani together, and their mutual cooperation is the driving force behind Numbani's success. It celebrates an event called Unity Day."
'Overwatch' To Celebrate Unity Day
From the very start, "Overwatch" has prided itself on being unconventional. It skipped Valentine's Day completely, even stating in a Tweet that they're "a different game" and have "decided to go in another direction." When asked by another Twitter user if the "other direction" was a different event, they replied that they will new events "for sure!"
March 21, 2017-Numbani Unity Festival, Doomfist Attacks?
The "Recall" cinematic was officially released March 21, 2016. According to Unit Lost-Great British Gaming, it would make sense for the Numbani Unity Event to launch a full year after it was first hinted at. This could arrive in the form of a cinematic to accompany the in-game event. In fact, players have already begun speculating the content of the cinematic.
Numbani's Gamepedia page further reports: "At some point after the Omnic Crisis, it [Numbani] was identified as an area with an active threat. It is currently under threat by Doomfist."
Overall, it's within the realm of possibility if "Overwatch" plans to officially introduce Doomfist through a cinematic featuring him attacking during the Unity Day Festival. The wire mech file with the shattered glass and the new menu music (which could very well be "Omnic Crisis Music," instead of Doomfist's personal theme) also tie into that speculation neatly. And to be fair, it would be a very explosive entrance worthy of Doomfist's larger-than-life persona.
