‘Overwatch’ New Hero: 24th Hero Still In Question; Game Director Explains Sombra Sitting Emote & Why It Takes So Long To Release
Arianne Gift"Overwatch" Game Director Jeff Kaplan answered some questions when asked about Sombra's sitting emote and the 24th hero in a recent forum post. Simply giving a "24 is not who you think it is," the game's new hero remains a mystery up to this point, but the exec gave out answers as to why emotes take time to release.
Fans have speculated for some time now that Doomfist will be the "Overwatch" new hero, and actor Terry Crews even expressed his interest in voicing the character. But Kaplan's comment somehow put an end to the rumor, and Eurogamer quite agrees that Doomfist will not be the 24th hero. However, Kaplan does not name Doomfist, therefore is not explicitly ruling him out of being hero 24. But as the community wasn't talking with anywhere near as much enthusiasm about any other heroes, it's hard to imagine what else the director meant.
Elsewhere in the Blizzard thread, the game director confirmed that a Sombra sitting emote is planned, but it will take months before it goes live. "New heroes will most likely not have sit and laugh emotes for some period of time after their release," Kaplan said. "We'd rather not hold new hero releases for these emotes. But we do plan to add them over time."
As to why "Overwatch" character emotes take so long, the game director said multiple events and heroes are currently in the works. Kaplan explained that the emotes themselves don't take months; rather, it's more of a prioritization issue. As of the moment, the team feels that introducing a new hero will make the biggest impact to the game, instead of rolling out emotes.
A recent Activision Blizzard earnings call transcribed by Seeking Alpha also confirms the addition of "Overwatch's" hero 24, as stated by CEO Mike Morhaime himself. Morhaime said that fans should expect a new map in addition to a new hero, some game modes and additional events.
