iPhone 8 Latest Rumors: Will Start At 64GB Storage Instead Of 32GB, Adds Facial Recognition Technology
Cris Xander JulianoThe latest rumors surrounding Apple's highly anticipated next flagship smartphone, the iPhone 8, could be a welcoming change for its loyal followers, according to a report by Forbes. It suggests that the starting internal storage capacity will be 64GB and will ditch the 32GB variant.
The quality of photos, music, videos and apps continue to increase over the years that eats up a lot of the internal capacity of smartphone devices, while most Android phones offer microSD support to solve this dilemma, Apple doesn't offer the same solution. Instead, Apple has been increasing storage capacities as it releases new devices, and this year won't be any different.
It is speculated that Apple will offer two variants of its iPhone 8; 64GB and 256GB. This is quite unusual for a company that has been offering three storage options.
The company usually adds $100 per increase in storage capacity. The iPhone 7 with 32GB of storage was priced at $649, while the 128GB variant was $749 and for the 256GB, it sold for $849. If you compute how much per gigabyte costs, the 32GB variant is the most expensive between the three.
The cost per gigabyte for the 32GB is actually $20.28, while the 256GB costs only $3.31 per gigabyte. Assuming that the starting 64GB iPhone 8 will be priced at $649, there's a significant decrease per gigabyte as it will only cost $10.14, which is a good deal. However, previous rumors suggest that Apple will charge $1,000 for its higher-end devices.
In addition, other speculations suggest that the 5.8-inch AMOLED display is not curved as previously reported due to production yield bottlenecks and drop tests results. Also, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor is reportedly been replaced by a 3D laser scanner technology for facial recognition.
