Apple Orders 200 million Chips for Next iPhones, Targets 100 Million Units Sold for 2017
Charles LimApple's confidence in its upcoming flagship smartphone, the iPhone 8, is now becoming apparent as reports have claimed that the company is actually preparing over 200 million units to be sold to consumers. The claim is based on the company's recent order of its latest generation A11 processor from different chip manufacturers.
According to GSM Arena, different chip manufacturers are reportedly ramping up their production of processors as Apple has requested them to deliver at least 50 million chips per quarter starting next month. This means that for the second half of 2017, Apple is predicting that over 100 million of its new product will be sold.
This is a big gamble for the company, but based on their track record it wouldn't be far-fetched for them to reach that number. Last year, the company was able to sell 78.3 million iPhone 7 and 7 Plus units, which means that a 100 million target for the latter half of 2017 may be possible.
As per a report from Phone Arena, the 50 million processors per quarter will be fulfilled by a number of chip manufacturers. The companies involved includes suppliers such as Qualcomm, STMicroelectronics, NXP, Cirrus, Broadcom, ADI, Logic, and TI. All of the companies apparently have to work together to meet Apple's demands.
Aside from the processors, Apple has also reportedly placed an order of 95 million OLED panels from Samsung. The OLED panels are expected to be incorporated into the company's high-end offering, the Apple iPhone Edition. The other two variants, namely the iPhone 7s and the 7s Plus, will reportedly still use the same IPS display as its predecessors.
The high-end 5.8-inch iPhone Edition variant is expected to be sold at around $900 for the base 64 GB base model. The other two variants, namely the 4.7-inch iPhone 7s and the 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus, will reportedly be priced at around $650 and $750, respectively.
