Apple Releases Second Betas of iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 to Developers
Austin JayApple has rolled out the second betas for iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 13.4 to developers, evidencing a focused attempt towards Digital Markets Act compliance in European Union territories accordingly. This news follows the beta releases initiated two weeks ago, thus demonstrating Apple's determination to comply with the March 6 deadline established by the legislative framework.
Beta testing is available only to those developers who have enrolled in an Apple Developer Program; they need to go to their Software Update section of the settings app and activate the "beta updates" option. A developer account must download and install the beta versions, requiring an Apple ID.
iOS 17.4 brings sweeping changes to the App Store and app functionalities in the EU, allowing for alternative app marketplaces, payment systems, third-party browser engine support, and NFC access for banks and third-party payment providers.
These enhancements are exclusive to the European Union.
Notable changes for gaming enthusiasts include allowing cloud gaming apps such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce NOW. Mini-games, chatbots, and plugins can now utilize the in-app purchase system. The update introduces various features like new emoji characters, podcast transcripts in the Podcasts app, support for SharePlay with the HomePod, Stopwatch Live Activities, and more.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that iOS 17.4 is scheduled for launch during the first month of March on Friday, March 17, in line with Apple's commitment to observe the Digital Markets Act law six days earlier last week. This failure to cover the release dates under Apple's secrecy solidifies that there is a need for compliance with the regulation.
The beta version discloses vital changes to improve the system and comply with EU regulations. Although exact details are unclear, the update is set to counter issues about how Apple Stores and iPhones operate within the EU.
The speeding up release schedule is an outcome of the Digital Markets Act, a statutory document in the EU that seeks to enforce fair competition in the digital industry. Apple's quick response shows its commitment to abiding by local laws and providing hassle-free service for customers in the EU.
Currently, beta testing is conducted where developers and public beta users see those changes in a live environment. This phase of collaboration helps Apple get feedback that it can use to identify pitfalls and improve the update for a smooth public release.
As iOS 17.4 approaches, users can anticipate improvements tailored to the EU market and enhanced App Store functionalities. The update underscores Apple's responsiveness to regulatory requirements, reaffirming its commitment to refining and optimizing the iOS ecosystem.
iOS 17 adoption is slightly behind its predecessor, iOS 16, at 76% on iPhones introduced in the past four years, compared to iOS 16's 81% at a similar stage. Meanwhile, iPadOS 17 adoption is strong at 61% on iPads, surpassing iPadOS 16's 53%. This dynamic highlights a slower iPhone adoption for iOS 17, emphasizing iPad success. Stay tuned for iOS 17.4 updates.
