Google's flagship smartphone in collaboration with LG, the Nexus 4, is currently one of the most popular smartphones. The smartphone features high-end specifications but does not officially offer 4G LTE connectivity; however, reports indicate that settings on the smartphone can be tweaked to get 4G LTE connectivity.
4G services have many different frequencies depending on the country. Given the pocket friendly pricing of the Nexus 4, the 4G capability is officially deactivated in the device.
However, the Nexus 4 supports LTE on the AWS band (1700 or 2100MHz), which is currently used for LTE networks in Canada including Rogers, TELUS, and Bell along with some areas served by T-Mobile's 4G network.
"The component in question, which was discovered in a teardown of the handset by iFixit, is a Qualcomm WTR1605L chip, the same seven-band 4G LTE chipset that features in a number of other 4G-capable phones," reported Trusted Reviews.
If you want to enable 4G LTE on your Nexus 4 then you can try the step-by-step tutorial below. Please note that Mobile & Apps does not hold any responsibility for any issues that you may encounter after performing these changes.
Step 1: Go to Settings/More/Mobile networks/Access Point Names
Step 2a: Rogers subscribers will have to add new APN: 'lteinternet.apn'.
2b: TELUS and Bell customers can use the same APN as it was populated when the SIM card was put in the device.
Step 3: On the phone dialler enter *#*#4636#*#* which will open "Phone information"
Step 4: Open "Set preferred network type:"
Step 5: Select "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)
Step 6: The Nexus 4 is now ready to be used on 4G LTE network
"First, the phone reverts back to "WCDMA Preferred" in the Phone Information menu upon reboot. This means that you're going to have to enable "LTE/GSM auto" every time you restart the phone. You can download an app to quickly jump into the menu, but it's a stopgap measure at best. We're sure some custom ROM maker is going to build LTE into the phone sooner rather than later, but for now be aware that you'll have to perform the change every time you restart," reported Mobile Syrup.
Furthermore, Mobile Syrup has also posted a video tutorial on how to enable 4G LTE connection.
If you are a Canadian user of Nexus 4, will you tweak settings on your smartphone to get 4G LTE connection?
