Samsung has been doing well all year since the Galaxy S3 went on sale in May and the hard work seems to be paying off in a ton of profits. If everything goes well for Samsung, the company could ship a record number of phones.
The Galaxy S3 is Samsung's flagship smartphone for 2012 and so far, the device is expected to exceed 15 million sales worldwide in Q4 alone, which is impressive. That number accounts for the lions share of all the total Samsung mobile phones shipped in 2012.
According to UBS estimates, Samsung will manage to sell 61.5 million mobile phones by Q4 2012, breaking its previous record of 57 million (which was set in Q3 2012). As the only Android OEM making any significant profit from the platform, it is no surprise Samsung is doing so well while other are finding it difficult to break through.
When it comes to the Galaxy Note 2, UBS expects Samsung to sell around 7 million units during Q4 2012, with low end devices making up the rest of the sales. While smartphones are becoming a popular tool worldwide, the most successful devices are still feature phones and it will stay that way for a long time to come unless smartphone prices fall dramatically.
Furthermore, don't forget the ATIV S, Samsung's first Windows Phone 8 device. Nothing much is expected from this handset since Nokia and HTC has taken control of early Windows Phone 8 devices sale. Samsung may play the wait and see game to figure out if it should put much effort behind Windows Phone 8, or continue its progress with Android.
For those wondering, Samsung managed to sell $30 million Galaxy S3 devices since it went on sale in early 2012. The company may not get the chance to double that number, not with rumors of the Galaxy S4 going around and its alleged early 2013 release date on the cards.
