The Infinitec Android PocketTV Mini PC stirred quite some waves this summer when it ran its Kickstarter crowdsourcing campaign, and now the device has started shipping.
The Infinitec PocketTV initially pledged a goal of $100,000 on popular funding site Kickstarter, and managed to raise five times that amount, ending the campaign with $500,000. The gadget is now shipping to backers as promised, making it one of the few Kickstarter projects that actually stick to its deadlines.
The Android PocketTV Mini PC is a thumb-sized micro computer that connects to the HDMI port of any TV, converting it into an Android Smart TV. The gadget is available for order on Infinitec's Web site, with a $159 price tag.
At $159, the PocketTV Mini TV is considerably more expensive than most Android-based TV sticks that popped up in recent months, such as the Minix NEO G4, the UG802, or the G-Box Dyno. What makes Infinitec's device stand out of the crowd, however, is the fact that PocketTV ships with an Air Remote, i.e. a QWERTY thumb keyboard with a gyroscopic sensor that can be used as an air mouse. The Air Remote can also be purchased separately for $40.
Infinitec's PocketTV Mini PC packs a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, ARM Mali 400 Graphics, and 1GB of RAM under the hood, coupled with 4GB of internal storage. The gadget also has built-in Wi-Fi, and supports Bluetooth with an external USB Bluetooth dongle.
The Mini PC features a USB 2.0 port at one end, allowing users to plug in a keyboard, mouse, flash drive, or some other peripheral. The other end, meanwhile, features an HDMI port, enabling users to plug the gadget directly into a TV or monitor and run Android apps on a big screen. PocketTV also packs a mini USB port for power, as well as a micro SD card slot for additional storage.
Infinitec's Android PocketTV Mini PC enters an increasingly crowded market, with dozens of competing Android PCs currently available. The original MK802 Mini PC, for instance, costs half the price of the PocketTV, and Android mini PCs seem to be a growing trend.
