Users of the Samsung Galaxy S2 have some good news headed their way. Per reports, AT&T has started rolling out the Android 4.0.4 ICS update for the Galaxy S2 smartphone.
While the software upgrade is no Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, users of the Galaxy S2 will still welcome the slight bump from the Android 4.0.3 version of the ICS operating system.
"As of 12/19/2012 a software update has been made available for users of the Samsung Galaxy II with version 4.0 (ICS) installed. (If you have not updated to Android 4.0 (ICS), see the instructions below.) This update is released to applicable AT&T customers via firmware over the air (FOTA) which includes software notification of availability sent to the device. You must be connected to Wi-Fi for the update to install," noted AT&T.
AT&T pushed out the Android 4.0 ICS update for the Galaxy S2 earlier this year. However, it is not known when the Galaxy S2 will get upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the U.S. like its follow-up Galaxy S3. However, rumors have been rife that Canadian Galaxy S2 owners on carrier Rogers may get the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in late January. Given the trend of Rogers and AT&T pushing out updates around the same time, a possibility exists that AT&T's Galaxy S2 may finally get the much-awaited update in early 2013.
It is important to note that this ICS software upgrade is only applicable for the original Galaxy S2 (SGH - i777) and, therefore, if you have the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket the update would not be valid. The latest software update brings improvements to AT&T-branded app launch process, fix for the EAS/Office 365 security pop-up, and an update "to all Google branded applications."
The Android 4.0.4 ICS update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 is available over-the-air (OTA) or can be downloaded via KIES. To manually update the device and to check if you have received the update go to Menu > Settings > Software Update > Check for Updates and follow the on-screen instructions.
