World's largest chip maker for mobile devices, Qualcomm announced its new series of next-generation of processors at the International CES.
Qualcomm CEO, Paul Jacobs, during his keynote streamed a clip for an upcoming movie using his Qualcomm's new chip Snapdragon 800. Jacob also said that the chip will be available in the market in second half this year.
The San Diego-based chipmaker announced four new processors under its Snapdragon series - Snapdragon 200, Snapdragon 400, Snapdragon 600, and Snapdragon 800.
The Snapdragon 800 has 75 per cent more power than the company's current fastest model, Snapdragon S4 Pro. At the same time the chip is power efficient which might make it a favorite among smartphone makers. Qualcomm's present top-line processors are used in phones like the LG Optimus G, HTC Droid DNA, and Nokia Lumia 920.
This is Qualcomm's SoC quad-core chip that uses its new Krait 400 CPU design produced with a 28nm process for a frequency of 2.3GHz.
Talking about the Snapdragon 800' performance, Jacobs said, "This is console quality gaming on a mobile device."
The processor will give smartphones and tablets users a playing-on-console feeling because of its updated GPU and 4K screen resolution.
In the Snapdragon 800, Qualcomm is using an Adreno 330 GPU. So far, the company was using Adreno 320 GPU in its fastest processor, Snapdragon S4 Pro.
The Adreno 330 delivers double the performance of the current Adreno 320 GPU, according to Qualcomm, while the new Snapdragons now integrate 802.11ac Broad connectivity support for even faster Wi-Fi throughput.
The Snapdragon 600 is about 40 percent more powerful that the Snapdragon S4 Pro, and is expected to come in devices shipping before Snapdragon 800's arrival.
When it comes to graphics, the Snapdragon 600 has an Adreno 320 GPU, which is already found in current high-end phones.
Just a day ahead of Qualcomm's announcement, NVidia Corp presented its latest and fastest processor, Tegra 4, at the CES.
