With less than a month to go before RIM shows off BlackBerry 10 and devices running the next-generation OS, RIM confirms "at least" six BlackBerry 10 devices will launch in 2013. Is this going to be RIM's biggest hit since devices by the names of "Bold", "Curve", and "Pearl" were the devices of choice for corporate customers and consumers alike, or will this be RIM's swan song?
BlackBerry 10 is shaping up to be a very impressive iteration of the BlackBerry OS. This is going to the most important launch ever to come out of the folks in Waterloo. RIM has never been shy about releasing many variants of the same device depending on region, carrier, and technology and It looks like RIM is going to repeat theses steps and according to RIM's CMO, Frank Boulben, RIM will release at least six BlackBerry 10 devices in 2013.
RIM is expected to show off at least 2 models on Jan. 30. Those reportedly will be the "L-Series" and "N-Series". The L-Series is RIM's all-touch BlackBerry 10 smartphone and the N-Series is for classic BlackBerry lovers, featuring a physical QWERTY keyboard.
A picture recently leaked showing a possible mid-range model, similar to RIM's current Curve line. This is a smart approach as RIM plans on differentiating itself from the likes of Apple and Samsung by offering a model in various price points to corporate and consumers. One model features the traditional/familiar physical QWERTY smartphone RIM has been praised for years, as well as an all touch BlackBerry that competes head-to-head with the likes of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3. RIM is definitely covering its bases with this approach from high-end, mid-range, and low-end choices.
If RIM can make BlackBerry 10 a success it could be the comeback of a lifetime, and, if not, it might fall by the way side similar to webOS and the smartphones and tablets running the OS or possibly to Microsoft's very modest and small current Windows Phone 8 success. The spotlight and possible answers to RIM's future will be unveiled on Jan. 30. So stay tuned.
