Samsung Galaxy S3 was one of the most popular smartphones in 2012 and rumors indicate that its successor, the Galaxy S4, will soon make its appearance. The Korean smartphone make will definitely deploy enhanced hadware specifications and improved features to the Galaxy S4, but will the upcoming Galaxy S4 be able to live up to the standards of its predecessor and better it?
Here are some of the known features of the Galaxy S3 compared to the rumored features of the Galaxy S4. We take a look at how Samsung's old warhorse and upcoming offering stack up against each other.
Display
The Galaxy S3 sports a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, 1280 x 720 pixels resolution and 306 pixels per inch (ppi). Rumors indicate that the Galaxy S4 will boast a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution and an incredible 440 ppi.
Processor
A 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor for the international variant and a 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 dual-core processor for U.S. variants powers the Galaxy S3. It is believed that the Galaxy S4 will have a 1.8GHz Exynos 5 Octa-Core CPU, which Samsung showed off at the International CES 2013.
Camera
The Galaxy S3 is equipped with an 8-megapixel rear-facing snapper and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. Speculations suggest that the upcoming Galaxy S4 will pack in a 13-megapixel rear-facing and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
Battery
A 2100 mAh battery powers the Galaxy S3. Rumors indicate that a bigger 2600 mAh battery will power the Galaxy S4. Additionally, the Galaxy S4 is also expected to support wireless charging, and Samsung is speculated to release a wireless charging kit soon after the official release of Galaxy S4.
Internal Storage And RAM
The Galaxy S3 has 16/32/64 GB of on-board storage and an option to expand the memory using a microSD card. There is no information regarding the internal storage for Galaxy S4, but users will hope for at least the same memory capacity as of the Galaxy S3.
The Galaxy S3 has 1GB of RAM (2GB of RAM for U.S. versions). The Galaxy S4 is expected to have 2GB of RAM.
Operating System
The Galaxy S3 is packed with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) upgradable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, whereas the Galaxy S4 is expected to run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie out of the box.
Availability And Colors
The Galaxy S3 was released in May last year and was initially launched in Marble White and Pebble Blue colors. As the popularity of the smartphone increased Samsung launched the handset in various other colors.
Rumors indicate that the Galaxy S4 will be launched in March this year and will start shipping from mid-April. No details about colors of the device are known, but the upcoming Galaxy S4 will be available in various colors just like the Galaxy S4.
On paper, the leaked specifications of the Galaxy S4 are definitely a step ahead of the Galaxy S3. What's more, with the Galaxy S4 speculated to feature the flexible "Youm" display, eye tracking technology, as well as the S Pen stylus, it seems Samsung is on to yet another winner.
