As Facebook updates its iOS app to version 5.4, you get three major improvements such as in-app video recording and sharing, voice messaging, and a revamped Nearby tab. The significant addition is that the new version will enable iPhone and iPad users to record and share videos right from inside the Facebook app.
The updated app promises the following additions:
- Send voice messages when you have more to say
- Record and share videos right from the app
- Share and connect with your favorite places using the improved Nearby tab
The new in-app voice messaging feature works almost the same way as the Messenger app. All you need to do is to click on the "+" button placed next to the messages text box, press the record button and release to send the voice message.
Users can now record videos by selecting the "Photo" tab placed right on top of the app, then tap the camera icon at the bottom left of the screen, change button from photo to video which is also at the bottom left of the screen.
The video recording feature arrives on Facebook just days after its rival Twitter released a stand-along app, dubbed Vine that allows users of the micro-blogging Web site to shoot and share six-second long videos that can be embedded into tweets. The Facebook app, however, stands different for its ability to record and include an audio snippet when sending a message.
The refurbished 'Nearby' tab offers ideas of interesting things to do in your area, based on your interests.
This is the third app update for Facebook in less than a month and the social networking giant is going aggressive on bettering its features. According to a recent comScore report, the Facebook app is the No. 1 mobile app now, overtaking Google Maps app, in terms of unique visitors in the U.S.
Earlier in January, Facebook messenger launched the voice feature allowing its users to send one-minute long voice messages instead of normal texts. It later brought the VoIP solution to U.S. users two weeks after its trial run in Canada.
The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and it requires iOS 4.3 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5 as well. The update can be downloaded now from the Apple App Store.
