The Guardian has reconfirmed previous rumors about the impending launch of Nokia's 41-megapixel Windows Phone 8-powered smartphone, dubbed EOS, in the U.S. this year.
The reputed British daily, citing sources close to Nokia, reported that the U.S. version of the 41-megapixel camera smartphone will be called EOS and will land Stateside this summer.
This will not be the first time that Nokia has unveiled a smarpthone with 41-megapixel sensors, though. The Nokia 808 PureView, launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012 was the company's first smartphone that boasted a 41-megapixel camera. However, it was powered by the Symbian OS, whereas the Lumia EOS will allegedly run on WP8.
Nokia Lumia 920 is one of the most popular Windows Phone 8 (WP8) smartphones around, giving stiff competition to other WP8 smartphone makers such as HTC, Huawei, and Samsung. However, the competition in the smartphone space is increasing rapidly and adding the 41-megapixel Pureview sensor to the Lumia range would certainly work in the Finnish company's favor, increasing the gap between Nokia and its competitors.
Previous rumors indicate that a refreshed Lumia 920, codenamed Catwalk, with an aluminum body may be in the pipeline for Nokia. So is it possible that the Catwalk and EOS are the same device?
The Guardian also reached out to Nokia for clarifications which refused to offer any comments.
Currently, the Lumia 920 is exclusive only to AT&T in the U.S. and murmurs suggest that Nokia is planning for a top-end handset for Verizon. We will have to wait and see if the purported Lumia EOS makes its way to AT&T or Verizon, or alternatively to other U.S. carriers.
