Going by its January-end announcement, Apple has brought the 128 GB iPad to its online store and the device is priced $799 for the Wi-Fi-only model and $929 for the model with cellular connectivity. The 128-GB iPad with Retina display is available in black and white and the shipping time is given as 1-3 business days.
Apple had quietly announced the launch of a high-capacity iPad in a press release on Jan. 29, 2012. However, the evidence of a larger capacity iOS device has found two days before the announcement in the newly released iOS 6.1 software update.
As it decides to double the previous maximum capacity of 64 GB, Apple is perceived to be looking at a new customer group such as enterprise users, educators, and artists.
"With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs," the press note said.
Further establishing its shift of focus, the company said that almost virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 are currently deploying or testing iPad.
It's only the storage capacity that is new in the 128 GB iPad, it has all the features same as its previous fourth-generation models. iPad 4 comes with a 9.7-inch Retina display, Apple-designed A6X chip, forward facing FaceTime HD camera and iOS 6.1.
Apple has been receiving much criticism over its pricing of the 128 GB iPad as analysts believe that customers will end up paying considerably more than what it really costs Apple for the added 64 GB of memory. According to Andrew Rassweiler of IHS, Apple spends just around $35.20 more for the 64GB of flash memory on the 128 GB model.
