As expected, Apple has come out with a quick fix for the performance issues linked to the iOS 6.1 update and yes, the iPhone-crazy crowd has been quite excited about it.
As it releases its updated firmware iOS 6.1.1 to iPhone 4S users, Apple's knowledge base article said, "This update fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S." However, the unexpected was that the iOS 6.1.1 update did not go out to owners of other iOS devices. While the update offers a great deal of relief for iPhone 4S users, Apple seems to have not paid any heed to the plight of iPhone 5 owners who are also reportedly affected by the iOS 6.1 update issues.
A number of iPhone 5 owners have raised several complains about iOS 6.1's negative impacts, such as faster battery drain and overheating, on their smartphones, Replying to a user (Michael Ginsberg) who claimed to be getting 'insane battery life' after updating his iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1, a user said that he is seeing 'the exact opposite' and wrote "My iPhone 5's battery is going down pretty fast" after the iOS 6.1 update.
This is not an isolated complaint. The same issues were echoed in many user complaints on the Apple Support Communities. "Did the update to 6.1 last night. Left it unplugged on my desk and over night the battery drained about 35 percent. With iOS 6.0.2 it only lost approx. 5 percent, said another user who upgraded his 64 GB iPhone 5 to iOS 6.1.
"Updated to iOS 6.1 on an iPhone 5. Was 100 percent charged at 8AM. WiFi is off. Bluetooth is On. With very little actual usage, my battery is drained 94 percent of its charge (now showing 6 percent) at 2PM," another iPhone 5 users shared his experience with the latest software update.
The issue is not confined to UK or U.S. users alone. "After update, my iphone 5 no longer surf at LTE speed. More like 'edge' speed even though the signal shows 'LTE'. Intermittently it speeds up, but most of the time, it is slow... Regretted updating," an iPhone users based in Singapore wrote.
"Same Problem in Russia. With different operators...With every iphone 5 in the house. Very disappointing update. There is anyway to turn back on 6.0.2?", a user from Russia wrote on the support forum.
Vodafone UK and 3 Austria had earlier warned its iPhone and iPad users not to upgrade to iOS 6.1 which prompted Apple to come out with a quick fix. It was also reported that Apple's iOS 6.1 update is causing excessive logging on Exchange servers.
