The Xperia Z is already here and the device has garnered a host of positive reviews from all the dedicated tech sites. The good news for all those owning the Sony Xperia Z is that it features a locked bootloader.
XDA forum member goroh_kun has just revealed an exploit that will grant root level access on a bootloader-locked Xperia Z for all those looking to root their devices, according to reports.
goroh-kun has made quite a name for himself with rooting devices, and a XDA forum member states: “for those who dont know, dont remember.. goroh_kun is a master developer who helped the X10 users get bootloader bypassed & custom kernel booting on locked bootloader! and if he has the Xperia Z (or a similar variant, rest assured that some great things are coming!!)”
“goroh_kun if you are reading this, i am a HUGE fan of your work and really appreciate all that you had done for the Xperia X10 and look forward to more awesome stuff for Xperia devices!”
This will be the first time that users will get root level access on a bootloader-locked Xperia Z and users without a bootloader-locked Sony Xperia Z handset have been able to root their handsets since mid-February.
“So how do you root your locked handset? The steps are actually pretty easy from the sounds of it, but there are a few small problems that seem affect the Z after using the method. For example, some reports say NFC doesn’t work after applying the exploit, but there is an easy fix: delete the /data/usf directory and it will work again,” Android Authority writes.
The user, before commencing with the rooting process, needs to make sure that he or she has a Xperia Z with stock Sony JB firmware (as of now tested on: 10.1.D.0.317, 10.1.D.0.322, 10.1.A.1.350), ADB drivers installed, and the rooting toolkit package provided alongside the root process.
To get started with the process, users can either manually follow the directions found on the XDA Developers forum or make use of the Root MANY ANDROID! script from XDA developer Bin4ry, which is now offering added support for the root. Moreover, Bin4ry’s script has even been tweaked to prevent the NFC error from occurring.
However, the report also adds: “Keep in mind that goroh_kun came up with the method specifically for the Japanese Sony Xperia Z and other bootlocked versions of the Sony Xperia Z. If you have an Xperia Z that doesn’t have a locked bootloader, there are other methods out there that you can use instead.”
