Nokia is finally pushing toward a Windows Phone 8 device that is cheap enough to combat the legion of Android devices at the low-end section of the spectrum. The handset in question is the Lumia 520, and it's going for £99 in the UK.
The Lumia 520 first showed its face at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona earlier in the year. Nokia dubbed the device as the most affordable Windows Phone 8 handset yet, which was quite surprising because not too long before that, Nokia was praising the Lumia 620 as the most affordable: who would have thought the giant from Finland could come up with a less expensive device in such a short timeframe.
Compared to the Lumia 620, the Lumia 520 has a larger 4-inch display, no front-facing camera, up to 64GB of storage, the same specifications on the inside, which includes 1GHz dual core processor, 512MB RAM and NFC. If you're a person who digs LTE, you won't find that here, but Wi-Fi and 3G should be enough to keep many consumers interested in the handset.
If you're interested in picking up a Lumia 520, you can do so by heading to O2; the device is sold there for £119 on prepay, while Carphone Warehouse offers the device at a cool £99.95 on PAYG, according to The Register. Furthermore, a £7 per month T-Mobile contract is a requirement: this gives you 250 minutes of free talk time and 250MB of data.
With Nokia finally kicking into gear with some decent entry-level Windows Phone 8 devices, maybe this is time the platform might rise to new heights. So far, Nokia hasn't officially announced a new Windows Phone 8 handset, but there is talk of the Lumia 928 for Verizon Wireless, and another handset with a 41-megapixel camera dubbed as the Nokia EOS. This handset is said to have similar camera capabilities to the Nokia 808 PureView, and the only difference is the operating system.
