The HTC One X smartphone will reportedly receive its last update, to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which means no Key Lime Pie in its future.
Most of the news regarding future HTC upgrades was positive, but this piece of information does not bring good news for owners of the aging dual-core HTC One X. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean made its debut back in November 2013, but only a handful of non-Nexus devices actually got the latest version of Android.
Even HTC, one of the world's largest manufacturers of Android devices, unleashed its new HTC One flagship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board, not 4.2. The company has yet to announce an upcoming Android 4.2 update or other updates to the latest Android for older devices.
The HTC One X will reportedly get the upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but HTC leakster and developer @LlabTooFer claims this will be the last major update for the handset. This means that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie may not be in the cards.
Google is expected to introduce Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie at its Google I/O conference in May. Android 5.0 will come as the latest version of Android and the replacement of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. So far the 5.0 update is not official for any device, which means there's still a chance for the HTC One X to get it eventually. On the other hand, @LlabTooFer proved reliable with this kind of information in the past.
Should @LlabTooFer prove to be right this time as well, HTC users will get burned once again. HTC Rezound owners, for instance, are still stuck on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) although the handset has solid hardware that could handle an update. The Droid Incredible 2, meanwhile, was supposed to get Android 4.0 ICS by the end of August, but the update never arrived.
If the HTC One X may not get an update to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, most likely its lesser siblings, such as the HTC One S and HTC One SV won't get it either. The tipster also hints at a similar situation for the Samsung Galaxy S3, but @LlabTooFer's track record pertains to HTC handsets. Take the Galaxy S3 allusion with a heftier amount of skepticism than the HTC One X news.
Returning to the HTC One X, it may not get an update to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie but it is expected to get the new HTC Sense 5 and an upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean soon.
