Nokia seems to be working on its first quad-core Windows Phone 8 smartphone, if recent benchmark results prove to be accurate.
The upcoming Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 (WP8) device with a quad-core processor may turn out to be the much-rumored Nokia Lumia EOS camera smartphone, but nothing is certain for now.
The benchmark results in question came from the GFXBench database, but details are scarce regarding the upcoming Nokia Lumia WP8 quad-core handset. The benchmark shows a Qualcomm chipset with 4 CPUs and an Adreno 305 GPU. The Qualcomm processor could be the Snapdragon 400 quad-core chip with four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz.
Nokia has an event scheduled for July 11, when the much-anticipated Lumia EOS is expected to make its debut. The Lumia EOS may be the quad-core smartphone featured in this benchmark, but it's also possible that Nokia is prepping another handset to unveil instead or along with the EOS.
While the Lumia line may finally get a quad-core smartphone, the benchmark further indicates that the handset will sport a 720 x 1280 resolution display, not 1080p. The Adreno 305 GPU, meanwhile, is the same as the one found on the Nokia Lumia 620, which is intriguing for a quad-core device.
It's likely that this quad-core smartphone is actually not the rumored 41-megapixel Nokia Lumia EOS camera smartphone, despite popular expectations. The benchmark results do look promising enough, but the rumored Lumia EOS would likely require far more horsepower such as a Snapdragon 800 processor and Adreno 330 graphics.
On the other hand, anything is possible. Nokia made no official announcement just yet, which means that for now both the Lumia EOS camera smartphone and this quad-core device starring in benchmark results remain in the rumor state.
Nokia is betting big on Windows Phone 8 in a crucial bid to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive market, but so far the Finnish company failed to keep up with more powerful rivals. A quad-core smartphone could mark a significant step forward for the company's Lumia line of Windows Phone 8 smartphones. If the Nokia Lumia EOS turns out to boast a 41-megapixel camera and a quad-core processor it may be the hit Nokia so desperately needs.
