Motorola Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra & Droid Mini now available from Verizon Wireless

Alexandra Burlacu

Droid fans on Verizon can now go ahead and purchase the new Android-powered Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid Maxx.

The new Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra are Motorola's brand new flagship devices for Verizon. The two handsets resemble previous iterations of Droid smartphones but sport similar specs to the latest Moto X, which is quite an impressive device.

Both smartphones are already available for purchase in Verizon brick-and-mortar stores, but those who want to order online will have to wait a bit longer. Verizon mentions that both handsets "will ship by August 27" when ordered online, without giving any explanation for the delay.

The Motorola Droid Ultra joins Verizon's lineup with a $199.99 price tag on a two-year contract. Those who don't want to commit to a lengthy agreement will have to shell out $599.99 for the handset.

The Verizon-exclusive Droid Ultra sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 resolution, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and supports LTE and NFC. Other features include a splash-resistant case, a 10-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter, as well as a 2,140 mAh battery.

The Motorola Droid Maxx, meanwhile, is similar to the Ultra in many aspects. This model, however, packs a powerful 3,500 mAh battery, which makes the smartphone a bit thicker. The Droid Maxx comes with 32GB and it is a Verizon exclusive as well. The carrier charges $299.99 for the smartphone on a two-year contract, or $699.99 contract-free.

The smaller, lower-priced Motorola Droid Mini was expected to join Verizon's lineup starting on Aug. 29, but the smartphone is already available for purchase now. The Verizon Droid Mini costs just $99.99 on a two-year contract with the carrier.

Verizon will also start selling the HTC One on Aug. 22, after months of delays. The new HCT flagship will cost $199.99 on a two year contract. The Moto X, meanwhile, may hit Verizon on Aug. 23 or Aug. 29 and it is expected to sport a similar $199.99 price tag.
