Samsung has officially announced that the Galaxy S3 is getting an over-the-air (OTA) update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean on Sprint and U.S. Cellular.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the company's flagship smartphone from last year. Despite the new Samsung Galaxy S4 available on the market and sporting higher-end specs and features, the Galaxy S3 still packs a punch and is considered a top-notch smartphone.
Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3 were eagerly waiting for an update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and now users on Sprint and U.S. Cellular are finally getting the update, as well.
Samsung has announced that the latest flavor of Jelly Bean has started to roll out to the Sprint and U.S. Cellular versions of the smartphone, and should reach all users soon. Keep in mind that this is an OTA update, which means that it is rolling out gradually and it may take some time to reach everyone.
The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 will bring the firmware to version L710VPMJ9, according to Samsung's announcement. Android 4.3 will bring plenty of changes, including the addition of Samsung's KNOX security suite, as well as support for the company's Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
The software update will also upgrade some of Samsung's own apps, such as Multi-Window multitasking, Group Play, and Sound and Shot camera functionality. It also adds the Samsung Link application and brings a number of bug fixes. Improvements under the hood include Bluetooth Smart and OpenGL ES 3.0.
The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy S3, meanwhile, will bring the firmware to version R530UVXUBMJA, Samsung announced. The new firmware build will bring the same features mentioned above, with Galaxy Gear support and Samsung KNOX as the highlights.
Samsung Galaxy S3 owners on Sprint or U.S. Cellular should receive an OTA notification regarding the update anytime now. To check for the update manually, go to Settings > About device > Software update. It remains to be seen now whether this update is stable and works well, or if it encounters the same issues that affected the international version of the Galaxy S3. If you received the update, let us know how it fares in the comment section below.
