Spotify made some big announcements regarding its mobile expansion, and smartphone users can now enjoy a free experience in shuffle mode.
As it looks to further expand its business, Spotify has added free streaming of artists and playlists for iPhone and Android smartphone users. This free streaming, however, only applies to shuffle mode. Basically, smartphone users will now be able to look up artists and play their music in shuffle mode, with some suggested tracks and a few ads in between (six skips per hour).
"From today, Spotify gives you access to millions of songs across your mobile devices for free. Listen to all your playlists, discover new music, or simply sit back and dig into your favorite artist's entire back catalogue. And with Spotify launching in 20 new markets today, it's never been easier for more people across the world to discover and play more great music," the company announced in a blog post on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
"Today we're giving people the best free music experience in the history of the smartphone and tablet," added Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek. "Whether you're going to the gym, or giving a party with friends. Just sit back and let Spotify serve you great music for every moment in your life."
The news is even better on the tablet front, as Spotify is now offering free on-demand listening on tablets, supported by ads. Lastly, it's also big news for Spotify to welcome Led Zeppelin to its music library. Only Led Zeppelin I and II are available for now, but more albums will reportedly make their way to Spotify throughout the week. You may or may not be a fan of Led Zeppelin, but it's a major win for Spotify nonetheless, as the band's albums are not available on rivals iTunes Radio, Google Play Music All Access, or Rdio.
The new and free Spotify is now available for download for both iOS and Android users. Head to the App Store here to get the iOS version of the app, or visit Google Play at this link to get Spotify for Android.
