Apple will reportedly launch two large-screen iPhones this year, one with a 4.7-inch display and another with a 5.7-inch screen.
Throughout 2013, various rumors floated around claiming that Apple would take it a step further in 2014 and launch iPhones with bigger displays. According to such rumors, Apple would join the phablet party and launch smartphones with significantly larger screens.
A recent report out of China now claims that both of those rumored devices - the one with the 4.7-inch display and the other with a 5.7-inch display - are real. The report says the information comes from multiple Foxconn insiders, who have revealed the new screen sizes.
The insiders have also reportedly revealed that both of these purported iPhone phablets would boast a biometric sensor. If this is true, it will likely be the Touch ID fingerprint scanner Apple introduced with its new iPhone 5S flagship smartphone.
Keep in mind, however, that unnamed "insiders" hardly make for an official, trusted source of information, so it is highly advisable to take this report with a big grain of salt.
Apple has revealed no plans to launch such whopping big-screen smartphones, and such an increase in display size seems a bit drastic. It was only in 2012 that the company finally increased the size of its iPhone, when it launched its iPhone 5 with a 4-inch display instead of the 3.5-inch screens found on all previous iPhones. While a further increase in size doesn't seem all that farfetched, jumping from 4 inches all the way to 4.7- and 5.7-inch displays sounds a bit dramatic to say the least.
Even with the slight increase in screen size for the iPhone 5, it still took developers quite some time to catch up and update their apps for the new display size. The report does not mention whether Apple plans to continue offering new generations of compact iPhones as well, or it would embrace the phablet trend altogether and launch only big-screen smartphones.
Joining the phablet marke would allow Apple to better compete with the likes of Samsung, which has a slew of big-screen devices for all preferences and budgets. At the end of the day, however, this report still seems quite farfetched, so keep a healthy dose of skepticism.
