An insurance company has conducted some tests to determine which devices are the most fragile, and the Apple iPad Mini and the Samsung Galaxy S4 topped the list.
After doing some research, the firm concluded that Apple's devices are not superior in terms of durability to devices from other brands such as Samsung, Google Nexus, or Motorola, on the contrary. The study concluded that the iPad Mini was the most fragile device, but the Samsung Galaxy S4 wasn't far behind.
According to a new report from The Telegraph UK, SquareTrade Europe has conducted some research, testing the durability of some devices in some extreme situations. As part of the tests, the devices were dropped onto a concrete floor from a set height, or dunked in water.
"We are all investing in more and more technology, so when we do we want to make sure that we are going to get our money's worth," said Kevin Gillan, managing director of SquareTrade Europe, as cited by The Telegraph. "By putting devices through tests that replicate real life situations, we want to help people make smart choices when it comes to choosing gadgets and ensure they are covered against accidental damage."
Based on the study, Apple's products dominate SquareTrade's Top 10 list of "Most Breakable Gadgets," with no less than four iDevices: the iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPhone 5C, and iPhone 5S. Samsung made the Top 10 list with three devices : the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Tab 3, with the current Galaxy S4 flagship ranking second. Google had three devices on this list as well, including two ASUS-made Nexus tablets and the Motorola Moto X.
The researchers assessed the design, construction, weight, "grip-ability," and water resistance of each of the devices involved in the study. As expected, the research also gave breakability scores to each device after completing the drop test. The higher score shows the most fragile device, and the Top 10 list goes as follows:
1. Apple iPad Mini - 7.5
2. Samsung Galaxy S4 - 7
3. Apple iPad Air - 6.5
4. Samsung Galaxy S3 - 6.5
5. Apple iPhone 5C - 6
6. Google Nexus 7 - 6
7. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 - 5.5
8. Apple iPhone 5S - 5.5
9. Google Nexus 7 2013 - 5
10. Motorola Moto X - 4.5
