Another day, another iPhone 6 rumor, this time claiming that Apple's next-generation flagship smartphone will sport a "bezel-free" display.
The iPhone 6 has starred in numerous rumors and leaks recently, as well as various concept designs trying to envision what it could be like. It was previously reported that the smartphone would boast a Sapphire Glass display for extra durability and scratch-resistance, but a new report now makes another interesting claim.
The latest news comes from The Korea Herald, which states that Apple will launch its iPhone 6 later this year with a "bezel-free" display. Eliminating the bezels around the sides of the screen would allow Apple to finally create a smartphone with a larger display, but without making it too big that it wouldn't fit into one hand.
The report referred to both the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S5, two of the most highly-anticipated smartphones of 2014. The publication mostly focused on the Galaxy S5, but it did note that Apple was working on a "similar" prototype with a fingerprint sensor and a bezel-free display. The report doesn't note any additional details regarding the iPhone 6.
Regarding the Samsung Galaxy S5, meanwhile, The Korea Herald claims that it will indeed sport a fingerprint reader, but it will be more standard, not the display-wide scanner or iris scanner that previous reports have speculated.
"'Scanning fingerprints on the entire screen, which was much talked about recently, will be available in the latter half of this year as there are still technological hurdles to overcome,' [the source] added, hinting that the production yield for the full-screen fingerprint scanner is still far from satisfactory," reads the Korea Herald report, as cited by MacRumors. "The source said that Samsung's top rival Apple is also testing a similar prototype sporting a bezel-less screen that features a fingerprint scanner."
Apple first introduced its Touch ID fingerprint reader with the iPhone 5S, creating lots of controversy, but also starting a trend. HTC followed Apple's lead and launched the One Max phablet with a fingerprint scanner on its rear, and Samsungwill reportedly join the party with its next-generation flagship smartphone. If this new report proves to be accurate, both the Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 6 will have displays with fingerprint scanners.
The iCompany is widely expected to bump up the screen size with its next-generation iPhone 6, with two models speculated to feature two different screen sizes (both larger than the 4-inch screen found on the current flagship.)
Keep in mind, however, that it's all just speculation at this point, with nothing officially confirmed. Consequently, it is best to take everything with a grain of salt until Apple actually makes an announcement.
