Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One M8, LG Google Nexus 5 & iPhone 5S in drop, slide, and dunk tests (VIDEO)
Alexandra BurlacuThe Samsung Galaxy S5 goes up against the new HTC One M8, the LG-made Google Nexus 5 and the iPhone 5S to prove which one is more durable.
As usual with new flagships, warranty provider SquareTrade has pitted the newly-launched Samsung Galaxy S5 against the new HTC One M8, the Nexus 5 and the iPhone 5S in a set of tests meant to determine the resistance and durability of the handsets, and how they compare to each other in this department.
The folks over at SquareTrade have put the smartphones through drop, slide, and dunk tests to see how they survive. Here's how it went down:
Drop Test
The four-foot corner drop test aims to determine how much damage a device can take when dropped from that height, landing on one of its corners. The Samsung Galaxy S5 got a few minor scratches, as did the iPhone 5S, but the HTC One M8 survived this round with the least damage. The LG-made Google Nexus 5, meanwhile, barely made it through the fall, coming out with plenty of scratches and a shattered display. In conclusion, the HTC One M8 is the winner and the Nexus 5 is the sore loser of this battle.
Slide Test
The slide test aims to determine how far a handset will slide off a flat surface before falling off. The Nexus 5 made up for the drop test by beating all of its rivals in this round, sliding only 1.7 feet away from the starting point. The Samsung Galaxy S5, with all its band aid-like design, slid as much as 2.6 feet away, going past the iPhone 5S but stopping ahead of the HTC One M8. HTC's latest flagship went the farthest, sliding a whopping 2.9 feet. The clear winner here is the Nexus 5, while the HTC One M8 lost this one.
Dunk Test
Lastly, the dunk test aims to determine whether the smartphones can survive a dip in water, and how they react afterward. For this round, Square Trade took all four handsets and dunk them in water for 10 seconds while playing a video. The Nexus 5 stopped working as soon as it got wet and started working again later, but with no audio. The HTC One M8 continued working, but lost audio as well, while the iPhone 5S and the Galaxy S5 survived without breaking or losing audio.
And the Winner Is
SquareTrade concludes that the Samsung Galaxy S5 did well in both the drop and dunk tests, emerging as the ultimate winner of this series of tests.
"According to our research, 28% of smartphone owners, or about 44 million Americans, are considering buying the Samsung Galaxy S5," said SquareTrade CMO Ty Shay. "With this level of demand, we really wanted to put it to the test against other hot Android phones in the market right now. It's good to see a major player like Samsung designing phones with accidental water damage in mind. We were also surprised to see how well the new S5 did in the drop test - as previous models suffered significant damage."
The Samsung Galaxy S5 ranked as "medium risk," proving that it has greatly improved in terms of durability compared to its predecessor. Watch the video below and see how the Samsung Galaxy S5, the HTC One M8, the Google Nexus 5 and the iPhone 5S performed in SquareTrade's drop, slide, and dunk tests.
