‘X-Men Apocalypse’ Review: A Step Back For The X-Men Franchise?

James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence have been back to inspire, teach some new mutants and save the world in "X-Men Apocalypse", the third film in a prequel series. However, according to some critics, the film did not live up to the standards of its predecessors.

The movie, which is set in 1983, shows the struggle of Mystique and Professor Charles Xavier, as they strive to mentor a new group of mutants to defeat a very old enemy named Apocalypse.

The new movie stars a bunch of newcomers like Oscar Issac playing Apocalypse, Olivia Munn as Oscar's ally, Sophia Turner from "Game of Thrones", Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lana Condor and Ben Hardy, according to E! Online.

Other returning stars of the movie include Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne and Evan Peters.

Majority of the first hour of the movie is devoted towards getting the members back together, in which the characters have some emotional scars, according to New York Times. For example, Magento, played by Michael Fassbender has been seen getting settled with a family in Poland.

"Thirteen years later, the X-Men are bigger, and the effects used to bring their powers to life are even more convincing," Matt Singer from Screen Crush mentioned. "But what's missing at this point is that sense of awe and wonder from those early days. For all the fighting and blasting and bamfing, we've seen it all before-sometimes literally."

Since Singer has always used technical mastery to be a near- absolute filmmaker, hence his X - Men movies has always been of a higher class of superhero movies. Thus, it is not strange that viewers don't seem to know that the characters are wearing costumes until a majority of the movie has passed.

Thus, although the movie provides entertainment to majority of the viewers, yet it also highlights the fact that the franchise is tiring, and in dire need of some innovative and interesting concepts to continue the sequels.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is rated PG - 13 with a duration of 2 hours and 23 minutes. It is scheduled to hit the theaters on Friday May 27.
