E3 2016: 'Quake Champions' Revealed; Bethesda Announces Possible 'Overwatch' Killer
Jazz RosinKicking off Bethesda's E3 press conference is the announcement of iD Software's new team shooter title, "Quake Champions."
Bethesda has just dropped one of the shockers of this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, surprising the audience with a trailer for its new "Quake" title. From reviving the "Doom" franchise, it seems that the game publisher is set on breathing new life into its older but popular IP's.
Tim Willits, iD Software's studio director, confirmed that "Quake" is definitely back. Willits described "Quake Champions" as "a competitive arena-style first-person shooter for the PC designed for players of all skill levels."
"Whether you are new to Quake or have been fragging for the last 20 years, Quake Champions will give you the challenge and rush you'd expect from iD Software multiplayer games." Willis added.
The trailer showcased a variety of warriors battling it out in a combat zone that has an air of old-school feel to it, IGN reports. The studio director said that "Quake Champions" will feature a diverse character lineup, each with their own unique abilities, allowing different styles of gameplay.
Willits also said that "Quake Champions" will also feature top notch eSports play at every level, something that the "Quake" brand has been known for many years.
The "Quake" series is one of the first major eSports games, according to The Verge. The new title is seemingly taking inspiration from current MOBA games, with character abilities becoming a major part of the game. Despite the influences, however, Bethesda confirmed that "Quake Champions" will still be the same arena multiplayer FPS that the fans grew up with.
Once "Quake Champions" is released, it is possible for the game to be pitted against Blizzard Entertainment's recently launched FPS arena-type shooter "Overwatch".
Gamerant reports that Bethesda also has not specified any platforms during its press release, but the games presenter referred to the game as a "PC Shooter".
Bethesda is hoping to mirror the success of its recent old IP reboot "Doom" with "Quake Champions." More details will be unveiled at this year's QuakeCon in August.
