'Dark Souls 3': Series Director Hidetaka Miyazaki Apologizes For Controversial Poise Stats Issue

The director of "Dark Soul 3" has apologized about how the developers have handled the issue about poise stats in the game.

The "Dark Souls" franchise is designed to be a difficult game, and sometimes players are kept in the dark as to how some of the game's mechanics work.

In previous games, the poise stat prevents players from staggering while taking hits. The higher the poise stat is, the less chance of the players getting staggered.

That was not the same thing with "Dark Souls 3," and according to Kotaku, it had no effect on staggering, despite many elements in the game suggesting that it does.

Kotaku reported this in April, and the stat description said "The ability to withstand attacks without breaking form." To seasoned "Dark Souls" fans, that meant that it affects staggering, and animations, like attacks, should not be interrupted.

Despite what the description says, it seems that poise does not work that way on "Dark Souls 3." As Youtuber SteamBoy27 uploaded a video of him playing "Dark Souls 3" decked out in heavy armor and accessories with high poise stats.

His character is still flinching at enemies' blows despite the high poise stats and the level gap, which should not happen. Kotaku pointed out that it renders heavy armors, which have high poise stats, virtually useless.

In May, From Software said that the poise stat is actually working as intended, which made fans more upset.

"The poise stat is working as intended and is not 'turned off' as some fans have theorized," a spokesperson for Bandai Namco told Kotaku in an email. "The stat works differently than in past games and is more situational, which seems to be the reason for the confusion."

Kotaku once again emailed the director of "Dark Souls" Hidetaka Miyazaki about the poise stats, and the lack of communication about it.

The director did not explain what poise actually does, but said that this is issue could have been handled more appropriately.

"This isn't something we are particularly proud of," said Miyazaki. "With how things are handled now, it can be improved and this is an agenda item we'll be working on in the future."
