GoPro Action Camera Buying Guide: Hero 4 vs Hero 5
C. de LacyThe GoPro Hero 5 release date has been postponed and is rumored to be moved later this coming season. Still, no confirmation from the company was made, giving consumers enough time to decide whether to keep or get GoPro Hero 4 or patiently wait for Hero 5.
While we could expect the best from the most popular action camera manufacturer, some consumers may still be torn between varying models depending on their needs. Here's a quick comparison of what we know so far about Hero 5 and how it compares with Hero 4;
Sensor Resolution
For some odd reasons, CNet claimed that the sensor size for GoPro Hero is a bit underwhelming with its 5-megapixel size. This pales in comparison with Hero 4's 12-megapixel. This may be subject to change once GoPro officially reveals the complete specs for Hero 5.
This might be one of the reasons why it is rumored that the Hero 5 will be far cheaper than the Hero 4. This, however, doesn't mean that consumers will find the Hero 5 to be bad in terms of footage quality as this mainly pertains to stills and not video.
GoPro is mainly used for videos so this factor may be overlooked easily.
Video Resolution
This is where GoPro cameras shine. The Hero 4 shoots 4k videos with Black being able to produce up to 30fps and Silver up to 15fps. As rumors suggest like BikeRadar rounded up, the Hero 5, despite the smaller sensor resolution, would top up a notch with its 8k video resolution.
If this were true, not only the Hero 5 outclasses the Hero 4 Black and Silver, but it also future-proofs itself as not a lot of cameras can do 8K. Not even a lot of high-end DSLRs and Professional Videocameras can do this.
3D Shooting Capability
It is rumored that the Hero 5 will have a built-in 3D video capture capability. Make no mistake though because the Hero 4 already has that capability, but it is required that owners buy TWO of them and that still excludes the dual-lens case. It will be expensive.
If the Hero 5, as speculations suggested, gets dual lens as a built-in feature, this would cut costs for users who'd like to take advantage of taking 3D videos for a more immersive experience.
Waterproof Capability
It is rumored that the Hero 5 can go down to 60 meters underwater. This would be a nice feature for divers who'd like to get their hands on GoPro's offerings. The Hero 4 Black and Silver only goes down to 40 meters and the extra 20 meters might be an eye-candy to some serious diving afficionados.
Price
Another interesting rumor revolves around the Hero 5 being just around $400. If this would be the case, it may be a hundred bucks cheaper than the Hero 4 Black.
However, nobody's sure of the actual lineup of models to be released in the Hero 5 line. Still, if all rumors surrounding the dual lens is true, it actually is cheaper in a way as consumers get two functioning lenses for the price of one.
Stay tuned for more news, comparisons, reviews and updates for the GoPro Hero 5.
