EA Sets Modest Sales Expectations For 'Battlefield 1' Despite Positive Reviews; Company Working On 'Pokémon GO'-Like AR Titles

Electronic Arts said that it is not expecting to sell more copies of its World War I-themed shooter "Battlefield 1" compared to the first titles.

According to the publisher's earnings report for the first quarter of FY2017, the company is expecting to sell less copies of the game compared to previous "Battlefield" titles.

"We've told people that typically a 'Battlefield' title does about 15 million in a year," CFO Blake Jorgensen said. "Our guidance is slightly under that."

"And we hope that that excitement builds and it will clearly go through that number," Jorgensen continued. "But for right now, it's slightly under that number."

With the high interest in "Battlefield 1," it comes as a huge surprise that the publisher itself is underestimating the sales outcome of what could be one of its biggest games this year.

The announcement of "Battlefield 1" was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction from fans and critics alike, with its trailer currently the most liked Youtube trailer of all time, according to Gamespot. The trailer now stands at almost 2 million likes and over 43 million views.

On the other hand, Jorgensen predicted that another one of its new titles, "Titanfall 2," will sell more copies than its first title, having sold around 7 million units of the first "Titanfall" game.

"We think it'll do more than that, but it's probably closer to 10 million than it is to 15 million as built into our guidance," he said.

Interestingly, Electronic Arts is also said to be working on an Augmented Reality title, much like "Pokémon GO," VG 24/7 reported.

The publisher is interested in the hype generated by the popular AR game, and is said to be excited about how the app has introduced AR to the masses.

A new "Battlefield 1" trailer will be showcased during this year's Gamescom. The game will be released on October 21 on PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4.
