It seems like "Sword Art Online" season 3 will remain as a dream for many fans.
Written by Reki Kawahara, the light manga has been adapted into an anime TV series by A-1 Pictures. The first season of the series aired in Japan from July 8 to Dec. 23, 2012 for 25 episodes, while its second season aired from July 5 to Dec. 20, 2014, for 24 episodes.
Since the finale of "Sword Art Online" season 2, there had been no known official announcement from the anime studio for the much-awaited third season.
With this, many believed that the renewal odds for the hit series is entirely low especially now that Skydance Television had acquired the global rights to produce a live-action TV adaptation of "Sword Art Online."
Laeta Kalogridis, whose previous projects include 2010's "Shutter Island" and 2015's "Terminator Genisys," has been attached to pen the pilot episode of the live-action series, Variety has learned. She will also serve as executive producer along with Skydance CEO David Ellison, Marcy Ross, and Dana Goldberg.
"For years I have been inspired by the inventive and masterful storytelling of the SAO franchise," Kalogridis told The Hollywood Reporter. "I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to work with such talented partners to bring this cutting-edge yet timeless story to a new format at Skydance."
The live-action adaptation of "Sword Art Online" will take after a splendid young beta tester Kazuto Kirigaya, also known as Kirito. Along with his group of friends and 10,000 other individuals, they are caught in a next-generation virtual reality online role-playing game.
"The game is a world unto itself: filled with sword fighting, monsters, magic, and mystery, where the stakes are life and death," Skydance Television explained. "Kirito and an ensemble of diverse characters must fight their way through this hostile environment while making lives for themselves in the fantastical world that is 'Sword Art Online'."
