Apple has already released the upgraded iOS 5.1.1. This new version of the iOS has minimal changes to software functions and concentrates mostly on fixing bugs. Although there were some questions regarding the release, it was eventually revealed that the newest version of Redsn0w can jailbreak the new version of iOS.
However, it is to be remembered that this jailbreak only works for A4 devices or older devices that are running 5.1.1 and any new devices (including iPad 2) will not be supported. Note that this jailbreak is tethered and if you don’t want to plug in your device whenever you reboot, its better that you don’t update just yet.
Here are the steps you will need to follow.
Step 1: Open Redsn0w and select the “Extras” option.
Step 2: Click on “Select IPSW”, and start browsing for the 5.1 IPSW that matches your device.
Step 3: Now go back to the main screen and, this time, select “Jailbreak”. Make sure that the “Install Cydia” checkbox has been checked before you continue.
Step 4: Follow the on-screen directions and put your device in DFU mode. Now the actual jailbreaking process will begin.
Step 5: After the completion of the process, wait for your device to reboot.
Step 6: Now go back to the main Redsn0w screen and go to “Extras”, and click “Just Boot”.
Step 7: Follow the on-screen directions again to boot your device into a tethered state.
Step 8: You should now be successful in your attempt to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1. (Remember: Since this is a tethered jailbreak, you will need to repeat step 7 any time your device restarts or runs out of battery so that you can continue using it)
