Speaking to GameSpot on May 18, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said the Wii U version of the game is the best-looking version. On previous rumors claiming the Wii U would be underpowered compared to the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Pitchford disagreed.
Pitchford said that the team is careful to respect the authenticity of the Aliens universe, and said the biggest advantage the game gets because Gearbox is developing it is that the quality won't be average - as he said, the team won't be "exploiting the franchise." He added one of the advantages of the game is the company isn't confined to 90 minutes, like the movie, and can play with suspense and action and integrate the two.
Pitchford added the team sat down with the director of Aliens - Ridley Scott - studying the storyboard and talking about the universe.
"Alien" Colonial Marines is an awesome, narrative campaign," Pitchford said. There is also multiplayer, in the form of aliens vs. marines. He said it differs because enemies are usually equal, such as humans vs humans in Call of Duty. However, Xenos - the aliens - are played from a third-person perspective and marines first-person. Aliens have "perfect situational awareness," and can see everything.
"We want engagement ... beyond each round. You'll unlock new weapons, new modifications for weapons," Pitchford confirmed. Content is also unlocked in the campaign and multiplayer, transferring over to each. Pitchford said some games cause players who play the campaign to be disadvantaged in multiplayer.
On the Wii U, Pitchford revealed the controller is the "best shooter controller I've ever played with" (which could be down to new analog sticks). He said the console is a next generation system, and "it's a very powerful system ... the best-looking console version of Alien: Colonial Marines is on the Wii U." However, he assured fans the game experience is similar across platforms.
On the touch screen, Pitchford said there are added interface options. For example, there's a motion tracker with sound coming from the controller. Moving the controller around moves the waves of the motion tracker.
Regarding multiplayer matchmaking for the Wii U, Pitchford didn't reveal much information but hinted it's supported. He said features such as pulling up scores are done on the tablet.
Aliens: Colonial Marines releases on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and the Wii U "very, very soon," Pitchford said, adding an announcement is imminent. Visit Gearbox Software's Web site or Sega's Alien: Colonial Marines page for more
