Hulu Lands Exclusive Disney Deal, Picks Up Classic Disney Hits

Hulu Lands Deal With Disney, Classic Disney Hits Exclusively Available On Hulu

The war of the internet-based streaming services may still be on-going, but Hulu's latest winning deal with Disney may have turned the tides in their favor - for now. Thanks to a new content-licensing deal of epic proportions, Hulu has gained exclusive subscription streaming rights to longstanding Disney classics like "Hercules," "Pocahontas," "Lilo & Stitch," and more.

Hulu has already started adding titles this week, which is why Hulu viewers shouldn't be surprised when the stumble across Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas," or everyone's favorite Chinese Warrior/Princess, "Mulan." According to Variety, the exact number of titles licensed to Hulu is 56 - making this literally the biggest movie deal for the streaming service to date.

No official detailed list currently exists, but Engadget names a couple family favorites slated to stream. We've already mentioned the classic Disney princesses Pocahontas and Mulan, to be joined by Tiana of 2009's "Princess and the Frog." Slightly newer - but still golden - live-action Disney movies include "Con Air," and "Step Up."

According to CNET, Hulu plans to gradually roll out their new exclusive 56 movies, one title at time. In return, Disney now has a 30% stake in Hulu, alongside other notable media giants like 21st Century Fox and NBCUniversal.

Perhaps the biggest catch to this seemingly to-die-for licensing deal is that Hulu can only stream Disney titles that have already been released. There are a lot of them, sure, but there's always the off-chance that some could find this a little stale - especially when compared to Netflix's own Disney deal. Back in 2012, Netflix struck a multi-year deal with the Mouse, which gave them exclusive content as well as permission to stream new theatrical releases.

Still, this latest deal proves Hulu refuses to get knocked out of the game. Hulu stands at a current 12 million subscribers, while Netflix boasts 87 million subscribers worldwide, and they're not intimidated. Aside from beefing up their movie catalog, Hulu is also set for TV streaming service this coming 2017.
