'Outlander' Leoch Castle, Set for Major Restoration Followising Visitor Influx Surge
Rommel'Outlander' has become a huge hit to the point that its fans have been curious about what is it to see the castle in person. The setting of the said series is the "Perthshire Castle" which was made famous by the TV show. The historic castle is currently undergoing major restoration following the huge influx of visitors at Doune Castle.
Thanks to "Outlander" the Doune Castle visitors have doubled in just a few months. Aside from the series, "Game of Thrones", "Holy Grail", "Ivanhoe", "The Bruce" and "Monty Python" all filmed in the said location as well. The said castles which pertain to the "Leoch Castle" in the series has become a regular for shows like this for filming with medieval stronghold just across the village of Doune in Stirling.
According to The Scottish Sun, in its report, around 71,000 people have visited the fortress or more, in 2016. The castle was also utilized as Castle Anthrax in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. With that, the castle becomes host to the annual "Monty Python Day." The Leoch castle in "Outlander" is actually Castle Doune which can be traced back to the 14th century. Recently, it was also used as a location for the Winterfell in one of the episodes of the hit TV show "Game of Thrones."
Because of this, the Historic Environment Scotland or HES has started major reconstruction and restoration work for the said castle. Walls, roofs, drainages and windows are to be affected by this massive restoration. A bigger room will house the visitor shop to provide more space and cater for increasing number of visitors. Car parking space is also one of the parts of the castle that needs to be taken care of as there are plans to increase lots without affecting the aesthetics of the property.
According to David Mitchell, the director of the conservation in HES, "Visitor numbers have doubled for the past two to three years in the Doune castle. It has become not only a significant cultural asset but also an economic asset.”
Just last week, Fiona Hyslop, the culture secretary have announced that an extra 6.6 million funds will be arranged for historic sites this year. Doune Castle was listed as one of the priority sites for work along with the Stirling and Edinburgh Castle.
