Disney Media Distribution Latin America was "very excited" over the prospect of a 13-episode "Selena" TV series revealing the stories leading up to the Selena Quintanilla's death. However, the Tejano singer's family, along with her loyal fanbase, is opposing the production.

The planned "Selena" TV series is based on the book "Selena's Secret: The Revealing Story Behind Her Tragic Death," by Emmy-winning author and journalist Maria Celeste Arrarás. It was 1997 when Arrarás first published the book, which saw a 20th anniversary edition re-release in 2015. This courted controversy due to the author's claims of extramarital affair and other scandalous speculations.

Sharing her enthusiasm on Facebook, the Puerto Rican journalist announced the adaptation of her 1997 tell-all. "It is a story very different from the official one that was told immediately after her murder. It turns out in the months before her death, Selena wasn't as happy as many thought," Arrarás wrote in Spanish.

The author then shared she has no doubts about the upcoming "Selena" TV series chance at breaking records in the same her book found success upon its release. However, not all share Arrarás and Disney's excitement.

According to Latina, the late singer's older sister isn't very happy of the upcoming project. Suzette Quintanilla even took to Instagram to lash out on the journalist, whom she accused of weaving a one-sided story, and relying on Selena's killer, Yolanda Saldivar. "Your book is based on a whole bunch of lies. Your source is a person who killed, cold-heartedly murdered, my sister, shot her in the back and left her to die," the older Quintanilla said.

A petition has since been launched to suppress Disney Media Distribution Latin America from pushing its Selena" TV series project. As of this writing, the petition has 2,852 supporters, with a goal of 5,000.

Selena Quintanilla was the voice behind '90s hit songs "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and "Dreaming of You." She died in March 31, 1995 at the age of 23.
