“Nioh” Review: The Ups and Downs of the Upcoming Samurai-Based Game
Ralphy Bonn SimThe upcoming samurai action game called "Nioh" is considered as a huge comeback for its developer Team Ninja. The game involves heavy action and Japanese mythology, making the game's imagery and cinematics set apart from the first two Ninja Gaiden games. The samurai-based game "Nioh" will launch this February 9.
According to GameSpot, years before Team Ninja developed "Nioh," the creation stood tall regarding with the characters, its trademark style, and merciless philosophy difficulties. The team had to make games that didn't suit their motif.
"It was a hard time for us; we didn't come from that style of game," Nioh creative director Tom Lee shared. "We are disoriented because that's not who we are. All of our men is a fine-tuned craftsman, and our directors have a very different vision about the gaming industry, so it was challenging to adjust to in those years."
Struggling to adapt was seen in the quality of Team Ninja's action games "Ninja Gaiden 3" and "Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z." Both games were impossibly difficult, unrefined, and needed some help to be popular. Another game called "Dead or Alive" series was still a pending game that still remains to be stagnant, and is slowly losing its chance to be a hit game, as reported by VG247.
Despite the hard times that the developers have been facing, the Software's Souls series began to gather players and became popular. By the success of the Souls series, Team Ninja was given an opportunity to restore itself and started making "Nioh."
The samurai-based RPG game "Nioh" was first announced in 2005. It was only a pet project by Koei co-founder Kou Shibusawa. Shibusawa's company started to develop it internally as an RPG based game on an unfinished script by a filmmaker named Akira Kurosawa. The first version of the game consequently didn't pass Kou Shibusawa's standards which lead the project to be transferred to another studio. Team Ninja assumed the responsibility and took "Nioh" under their wing in 2010.
