Samsung dedicated website SamMobile reported that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the 10-inch tablet developed by the company, is getting an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The news comes on the heels of reports that phones from the company will be receiving an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google's Android operating system.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is heading to the Galaxy Tab, SamMobile reported. According to the report, the update for the Wi-Fi models will be rolled out in the UK and Italy only. No reason for the same has been cited; perhaps the move is due to the size of the update.
SamMobile also claimed that a slew of tablets will receive Ice Cream Sandwich. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi + 3G and Wi-Fi only support the update. The same models for the 8.9 version; (likewise for the 7.7) and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 models will also be updated.
Galaxy Tab users in the UK can upgrade to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The updates are Over-the-Air (OTA) or through the Samsung Kies software. There's no specific size for the update from SamMobile, but given that it's a major version of Android it's probably going to be large.
Currently, the only Galaxy Tab missing the update is the 8.9 version, or users with the tablets in the U.S.
Head to SamFirmware to download the update. Since the update is Italian, it's probably not a good idea to update if you're unfamiliar with the language.
The good news is that the nearly 11 percent of Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich is increasing in number, but it's hard to not feel that the news is undermined by the fact that Google has released Jelly Bean. Jelly Bean offers major features over Ice Cream Sandwich, like real-time updating service Google Now. Given that Google wants developers building app for Android tablets, it's important that greater parity between devices running recent versions of the OS exists.
Of course, Android's open source nature means an unofficial solution is usually available.
